It made my day when I ordered steak tartare and the waiter returned with a cart to prepare it at the table. I got the small portion and wow, 250 grams is a lot of raw meat in one sitting! I paid close attention and then quickly wrote down the list of ingredients when he left: egg, ground beef, salt, pepper, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire, dark vinegar, Tabasco, chopped onions, capers, chives, ketchup.

What is not to like about a society that stops for cake at 4:30 every day? Better than cocktails. The only problem is, how to choose from so many equally good looking possibilities. How can I be sure I chose the best one? I am certain that, hiding in that mountain of choices is some delicacy; the likes of which I never dreamed existed. The exploration is so painfully slow at the rate of one dessert a day.

Today we drove from Basel to Appenzell, Switzerland. I spent half the day being lost. (That was okay.) Tonight we are staying in a little hotel in the foothills just south of town. Before dinner Mom and I walked past several dairy farms in the neighborhood. After dinner I raced the sunset to the top of the ridge beyond the hotel and this is the view south that greeted me.
